COLLABORATIVE ELECTRONIC R&D
Our Research Productivity Solutions, from Kinematik, are deliverable environments that position research communities at the forefront of research best practices and deliver on corporate demands for R&D productivity, IP creation and time-to-market.
Critical advantages over current technologies:
§ Replace paper notebooks with an object oriented research knowledge management system, capturing process as well as data
§ Deliver management decision support information, without additional overheads
§ Facilitate virtual teams with industry leading collaborative functionality
§ A transparent, virtual-team' view of project status and derived knowledge
Workspaces, stage-gate processes and workflows can be configured to significantly reduce non-productive overheads and facilitate the engagement of industry support organisations (government, legal and VC).
These advantages deliver three core benefits:
§ Significant improvements to R&D productivity and time-to-market
§ Higher levels of collaboration, transparency and manageability
§ Dramatically improved decision support capabilities
User-friendly Interface
eNovator is Kinematik’s industry-leading collaborative eR&D platform. The Collaborative Electronic Lab Notebook (CELN) module of eNovator is ideal for replacing the paper lab notebook. The content of most popular file formats is directly rendered and viewable within the browser. The main web-based user interface features intuitive drop-down menus, buttons and navigational tools that allow user to easily perform all essential tasks in and out of any of the sections within the notebook. A clearly laid-out Table of Contents section can also be used as an easy navigational tool. All clickable icons are very intuitive with mouse-over hints.

Flexible Organisation
While the CELN can capture all the data and documents related to any type of experiment, it also provides scientists with many options for organising their notebook in terms of their needs and personal preferences; Options:
§ for page view or continuous view
§ to use configurable Experimental templates
§ to freely configure the Experiment with various sections
§ to collapse or expand any section for easy viewing
§ to rearrange the Experiment content i.e. moving any component to other sections
Tight Desktop Integration
While the web-based user interface allows for easy access to the CELN from anywhere, eNovator does integrate tightly with the typical desktop environment. eNovator is tightly integrated with Windows Explorer so that multiple documents can be transferred through drag-and-drop at the same time. A built-in on-line editing tool allows scientists to modify Microsoft Office documents within the CELN. Furthermore, scientists can directly open files from, or save them to the CELN within Microsoft Office.

Scientific Toolbox
Efficient Reuse of Scientific Libraries
The CELN is designed to be efficient and take full advantage of an electronic tool through reusable templates. Scientific knowledge is captured in all essential details in the Task and Protocol Libraries that serves as a knowledge repository. Easily adaptable configurations of the Tasks accommodate all possible variations and personal preferences. Tasks and Protocols in the libraries can subsequently be used as templates for creating or piecing together new experiments resulting in significant time savings. Experiments can also be created by copying a previous experiment shared with other scientists. Excel and word templates may also be included in the CELN templates.
Automated Resource Management and Sample Tracking
Resource management is an important aspect of all scientific research. eNovator has incorporated sophisticated sample registration and sample tracking capabilities into the CELN. Easily configurable Category forms can be used to capture all essential data for materials and equipment used in the experiments. Barcode and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) capabilities are incorporated to automate registration and tracking processes with dramatically improved efficiency and accuracy. Barcode or RFID labels can be printed with configurable system-generated IDs to track the samples between plates and throughout entire scientific workflows. RFID also allows reading of multiple samples simultaneously with even higher efficiency for registration and tracking.

Built-in Design of Experiment (DOE) Tool
As a critical step of many scientific inquiries, DOE is a very important component of the CELN with an optional, easy-to-follow, step-by-step guided process. Many popular statistical algorithms are built-in such as Factorial Design and Block Design. During the DOE process, the CELN will automatically generate all experimental runs based on the varied factors and the statistical algorithm chosen (below). The DOE tool can be easily customised for advanced designs such as Mixture Design or integrated with third-party DOE tools such as JMP and MINITAB.

Convenient Plate Handling
eNovator also incorporates a convenient plate handling tool to facilitate the ubiquitous plates used in scientific research. The flexible tool can handle plates of any format including the popular 96-well and 384-well formats. Materials and samples can be added to the plate through an easy drag and drop interface (below).
Plate Configuration
Once the plate is designed, an image of the plate is viewable within the Experiment page and can be used directly as data entry points for the samples on the plate (below). Sample validation may also be performed during the actual sample loading process based on the desired design.

Easy Data Entry with Validation Options
Data entries can be conducted in several convenient ways. Scientists can either enter data step-by-step for each sample or sample-by-sample within the same step. Both options have easy navigation guides built in the data entry form. Along with the automatic data validation on numerical data entry fields based on the parameter ranges, CELN also provides the option for manual validation checkboxes for each entry (below).

Flexible Data Export and Experiment Report
Once the data is entered into the CELN, there are various convenient ways of retrieving them through the data export function or via experimental reports. The data export feature allows scientists to choose any combination of runs, samples and sample parameters to be exported into comma delimited files that can be imported into Excel or other third-party software for data analysis. The experimental report tool provides the option for all or a portion of the experiment data to be rendered in various popular formats such as Word, Excel, XML and PDF for IP protection and witness signing.
Powerful Searches
Search is the single most important benefit of an electronic system like the ELNs. With sophisticated indexing capabilities, eNovator provides several advanced search tools for scientists to easily find information related to their scientific research that has been captured with the CELN. For example, chemicals can be searched on their substructure, meta data captured with Category forms or barcode/RFID label.
Chemical Substructure Based Search
Content of all documents in popular formats stored within the CELN are fully searchable. Search criteria can be based on key words, scope, free-form Category, document attributes and natural language based intelligent query. All search results are displayed with summary information as well as links. Frequently conducted searches can be saved as convenient search templates for re-use.
Security and Regulatory Compliance
eNovator has sophisticated security and access control measures for safeguarding the intellectual properties. It utilises both granular as well as role-based security models that allow for flexible combinations of permissions applied to each every item stored in the system. eNovator also has full audit trail capabilities to maintain a valid history record for the events occurred during the experiments making it fully complaint with the FDA 21CFR11.
Multi-disciplinary Applications
CELN can be easily adapted for use in very specialised fields such as organic chemistry or genomics research. eNovator provides a chemical structure optional module with advanced features and functionalities (below).

Chemical Structure Tool and Gel Annotation Tool
Various Molecular Biology tools such as Gel Annotation are also included in the CELN and various BSML-based bioinformatics and genomics tools can be integrated into the CELN for informatics focused research when needed e.g. Vector NTI, Blast. The CELN can be integrated to equipment sets (Mass Spec, HPLC, NMR, XRD etc.) through an integration framework that allows the automatic capture and analysis of electronic data within the CELN.
The Ultimate Collaborative ELN
eNovator features a great scientific tool in the CELN that is simple to use yet with many powerful features to accommodate all scientific research needs. Scientific research is getting more and more complex and data intensive. There are some challenging obstacles for improving R&D efficiency such as communication and collaboration gaps, for which Kinematik’s CELN is a great solution. Built-in knowledge management and workflow automation tools make CLEN also the most collaboration-friendly ELN in the market. Information such as cost and risk can also be captured with the CELN, all of which can be linked to and reported at the project level to facilitate research project management and portfolio management. In summary, CELN will serve as a solid foundation for implementing eR&D in a research organization to improve R&D efficiency significantly.
